We must use it with caution.Let us not forget that most Greek towns are not located close to adequate water resources. Therefore, to cover our increasing needs, water is transferred from increasingly long distances, affecting ecosystems situated hundreds of kilometres away.

A tap that leaks water spends much more water than you can imagine:10-15 litres per minute. If you close the tap when brushing your teeth or shaving, you save 10 litres of water each time. And even more, when you wash the dishes. Make sure to fix any leakage.A dripping tap may waste up to 90 litres of water per day.

You’d better take a shower than filling up a bathtub. To fill up a bathtub, you need as much water as needed for taking 3 showers. And, don’t forget, the water heater consumes much more power.

Water in the flusher comes from the same grid as the potable water. Therefore, if there is a leakage from your flusher, fix it!You waste valuable potable water. There is a very simple way to save thousands of litres of water per year.Fill up a small plastic bottle with water (after first removing the label) and place it in the flusher. This way, you reduce its capacity. If you are refurbishing your bathroom or building a new one, choose a dual-function flusher; you will save up to 15% of the total water consumption.

Energy consumption in Europe has almost doubled in the last 20 years.Excessive energy consumption causes air pollution, acid rain and affects the climate.Read about what you can do to help save energy.

Make sure that you turn lights off when you do not need them.Select economy bulbs; it is a good solution. They have 10 times longer lifecycle and consume 75% less electricity than the ordinary bulbs.

Household appliances:

Make sure that you do not leave them turned on.Moreover, you should turn off the TV, the video, the music player, etc. using the button on the device and not through the remote control. Before purchasing a household appliance, always ask about its energy consumption, especially in case of energy-consuming appliances, such as refrigerators and air-conditioners.Choose those with the lowest consumption.

In an average household, the fridge consumes more than ¼ of the power.Set the temperature of your refrigerator properly (2 to 5°C in the fridge, -15 to -18°C in the freezer). Make sure that you do not open the door often. Do not place it close to a window or a heater.

Washing machine

Make sure that you fill up the bucket. Prefer washing your clothes at a moderate temperature. If your washing machine has an energy-saving program, use it.This way, you will save both power and water.

Water heater

Water heater consumes approximately 10% of the power consumed in our homes. Therefore, do not forget to turn it off. Make sure that your water heater is not set at a very high temperature.60°C is a very good temperature. We live in the country of sun.So, if you refurbish your house or build a new one, choose to install a solar water heating system.

Heating – Air Conditioning

Turning down the radiator thermostat by 1°C you save up to 10% heating costs. A high percentage of the energy is lost, due to poor insulation. So, insulate doors, windows and all cracks very well.In addition, make sure that you close the aeration vane in the fireplace when not using it. Clean or change the air conditioner filter once a month.

The waste produced by each of us throughout our life weights approximately more than 600 times our weight. Therefore, it is significant that we avoid producing waste, when we can. Say no to needless packaging. 1/3 of the waste produced from our household consists of packaging. So, try avoiding products featuring needless packaging.(For more information, please refer to chapter “Purchases”)

Ask the Municipality or Community services about the recycling programs implemented in your area.Keep recyclables, such as paper, glass, aluminium, separately and deliver them for recycling, if there is appropriate infrastructure.

Make sure that you maintain your car or motorcycle regularly. When they are properly maintained, they pollute less the atmosphere and consume less petrol. Avoid using the car for travelling very short distances.Until the engine warms up, fuel consumption may be even double than the regular one. In the same period, the catalyst does not function properly, so emissions are higher than usual. Do not leave the engine turned on, when waiting for someone. You place a burden on the environment and waste fuel. Moreover, you obstruct the proper functioning of the catalyst. Moreover, if it is safe, turn off the engine when in traffic jam.You need less petrol to turn it on after a while than to keep it on. Make sure that your tyres are properly inflated, otherwise fuel consumption increases. Nervous driving by consecutively speeding up and braking wastes fuel and increases air pollution. Never throw used lubricants from your car to the sewerage system or the ground.Give them to a repair shop for utilisation. If you think about buying a car, choose one with recyclable parts.
